Union Achievements 2010

Bicycle Shop:

In a proactive step to tackling car parking issues in WIT, the Students’ Union has opened a bicycle shop for students and staff at the Institute. The shop sells all bike accessories and bicycles to members of the Institute and offers a buy back option on bicycles returned in good condition.

Recreation Room College Street:


After lengthy negotiations by WIT Students’ Union a recreational is to be created beside the SU Office in the College Street Campus.

Bike Shelters College Street:


The Union purchased two Bicycle Shelters for the College Street Campus. It was one of a number of steps the Union are taking to promote alternative methods of transport to WIT.

Operations Manager:


In June 2010 WIT Students’ Union employed a full time Operations Manager, Lisa Condon. Her duties will be dealing with all the finances of the Union, management of Union shops, website Control etc. She is an excellent asset to the organisation and will add to the long term stability of the organisation.

Education Not Emigration Protest:


In November 2010 WIT Students’ Union brought 1000 students to Dublin to join up with 40,000 other students from third level institutions across the country in a protest titled “Education Not Emigration”.

Union Website:


The Union launched their new website www.witsu.ie. It is a very easy to use website, which will enhance the Unions profile and professionalism for the future.

Class Rep System:


The Union had 160 Class Reps attend Class Rep Training in the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross.

Samaritans Listener Programme:


In 2010, thirteen WIT students completed the Samaritans Listener programme. It was co-ordinated by the Unions Welfare Officer, Denise McCarthy. It is a joint consortium between the Samaritans and WITSU and it is a student led service to provide emotional support for students who may suffer from distress, or may have become isolated due to loneliness, illness study pressure or homesickness.

Condom Wednesdays


In a pro-active step for creating awareness on Sexual Health, the Union are giving out 30,000 condoms throughout the 2010/11 academic year. Individual packs containing two condoms are handed out each week for the twenty-four academics weeks.

Entertainment & Fundraising in WITSU:


The Delerontos, Chapters and Freshers Ball were held in the Dome Bar.
J-90 performed at our Halloween Fancy Dress (which raised €2500 for Solas Centre Waterford).
Hunks ‘n’ Trunks Male Beauty Pageant was held in the Dome Bar.
Lovely Girls Competition, held in the Dome Bar (which raised €1000 for Breast Cancer Awareness).
WIT Fashion Show Sports Hall (which raised €2500 for Ballybeg Remembrance Garden & Solas Centre)


Movember:


20 Male Students from WIT took part in the challenge of growing a moustache to create awareness of Prostate Cancer. €2000 was raised for the Irish Cancer Society and a fantastic effort by all in the “WITTY MO BROS”.
